原来何家棍已祖传至第五代，流传至今有１８０多年的历史。何家棍由第一代宗师何登魁１８２４年左右创立，其子何生洲、何盘兴在宁夏金积堡回民反清起义中以此棍法屡建战功，何家棍就此扬名，回族民谚从此有“何棍张枪，盖世无双”之说。

到了何金德老人这一代，何家棍法得到了当地民委和政府的重视和大力支持，何金德老人更在实战之外，创编了有着浓烈回族特点的武术表演项目，并一举在２００２年８月第五届宁夏少数民族运动会上获得表演项目的金奖。
只用单头出击的何家棍，最大的特点是出棍速度快、讲究实用，数招之间就能制敌，因而风格刚劲勇猛、棍法明快直接。另外，与双头棍法迥异的是，由于只用一头，非常讲究手法变化，棍中有枪，枪棍结合，讲求速度、创造惯性，通过“搁、掠、拔、削、扫、劈、搬、翻”的基本棍法，将全身之力集于一点，发挥无穷威力。
过去，何家棍不传外姓，也不轻易外露，多年来深藏民间。全国少数民族传统体育运动会为何家棍提供了一个舞台，何金德改变了祖训，开始将何家棍传授给习武爱好者，并支持儿子何建功开办武术培训班，使何家棍传播开来。仅在宁夏吴忠市，听说就有上万当地回民学习，将它当作健身强体的大众锻炼项目。
何金德说：“何家棍是回族传统武术的代表和缩影，充分体现了回族群众坚韧不拔、一往无前的特点，在民族地区发展延续的一百多年中，不断吸收精华、摈弃残次，我有幸成为它的传人，就一定会把它发扬光大！”
